内容简介:

Recent  scholarly works shed new lights on the intertwined relationship between  the American cultural Cold War policy and its cultural export in the  1950s and 1960s, particularly in Eastern Asian areas like Hong Kong and  Taiwan. Meanwhile, Substantial research has been carried out, mainly in  the European scenario, on the relationship between censorship and  translation, while only a few studies have addressed the Chinese  context. Out of her proximity to the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong in the  1950s is of temporal and spatial significance, where the political  triad, the British colonizer, the United States Information Services  (hereafter as USIS) and the Communist China, fights in the undercurrent.  This lecture will focus on literary translation in Hong Kong in the  1950s, with special reference to those commissioned by the USIS, trying  to delineate how translators applied self-censorship and manipulated the  cultural production out of ideological conflict. I will focus in  particular on the prominent translator Mae Soong, who tries to picture  the U.S.A as a beautiful paradise and discredit the former Soviet Union  against the cultural Cold War background.
